While there are no hard-and-fast rules for placing sconces on a dining room wall, some strategies create a more welcoming decor than others. As in the living room, it is important to place lighting fixtures as they will be viewed by seated guests. Stand up to decide on placement as part of your overall decor, then sit down to check that you do not have to address glare issues.
If you are on the hunt too, I want to help. I gathered a collection of nine of my favorite affordable wall sconces to share with you. They all have great design but are still neutral enough to fit into any decor!
Their ability to maximize precious leg room and desk space is the biggest selling point of wall sconces. Since many modern homes and big city apartments are short on space, sconces add immense value by simply staying out of the way. While a floor lamp or even a bedside table lamp take up valuable room, wall-mounted sconces free up space so that you can use it for other tasks. While they are currently pretty popular as bedside lights, sconces can also serve you well in the home office and library by replacing the traditional table lamps. A tidy way to clear up the desk!
I also was contemplating on whether or not to install the sconces center of the nightstands or closer to the bed. Even though I am all about symmetry, I felt the sconces needed to be closer for a better light angle. I found a tip that recommend to place bedroom wall sconces at least 8 to 10 ft apart. When I measured out 8 ft for our bed, the placement seemed perfect! So that’s what I decided to go with for our lights. Just for a reference, the distance between where the cord cover is mounted on the wall and the edge of our bed is about 7″.
The wall sconce originated from the Tiki torches and the old burning torches that were hung on the walls in medieval times. Obviously, modern sconces have come a long way from being raging fire balls on a stick! And one of the most popular ways to use sconces is as accent lighting. Whether you wish to highlight a lovely work of art or you wish to turn an architectural feature into the focal point of the room, sconces get the task done with effortless elegance. Most often, twin sconces flanking the feature you wish to highlight lend visual balance to the room.
Lamps Plus Facebook reader Wanda recently asked us the following: “Please give me some advice about hanging wall sconces above an electrical outlet. Do I have to knock a hole in the wall to attach electricity between the sconce and the outlet?”
Here’s another industrial sconce that happens to also be on a long, repositionable arm. It’s the classic Italian Tolomeo Wall Lamp, and looks perfectly at home in this Scandinavian-inspired kitchen.
